Grok vs ChatGPT

Grok and ChatGPT are the two assistants people compare most often. They overlap a lot, but differ in tone, free access, connected services and pricing for developers.

Two assistants, two very different companies

Grok and ChatGPT do many of the same jobs: they answer questions, write and edit text, explain code, read images and, in their official apps, search the web. The differences show up around the edges. Grok comes from xAI, now part of SpaceX, and is tied closely to the social network X. ChatGPT comes from OpenAI and is the most widely known AI assistant, with a large set of built-in tools and integrations. This page compares them as they stand in October 2026, both as apps you use and as models developers can call.

A quick note on our site: Grok.Online is an independent website that runs Grok models only. ChatGPT and OpenAI's GPT models are not available in our chat.

Models and how smart they are

Both companies now ship families rather than single models. OpenAI's GPT-6 line has three tiers: Astra at the top, Sol as the cost-efficient high-end model, and Luna as the fast, cheap tier. OpenAI says ChatGPT's free and Go tiers run on GPT-6 Luna and paid tiers on GPT-6 Sol. xAI's current flagship is Grok 4.7, released September 21, 2026, with Grok 4.20 and Grok 4.3 as cheaper, older options.

Which one is "smarter" depends on the task and changes with every release, so we do not quote benchmark scores here; both companies publish charts that favour their own models. A fair summary: at the top end, Grok 4.7 and GPT-6 Sol or Astra are in the same league for coding and analysis, and in daily use the quality of your prompt matters more than the logo on the model. The best test is your own work: run the same few tasks through both. Use prompts you can judge, such as a summary of an article you have read or a calculation you can check, and note which answer needed less fixing.

Features in the official apps

In their own apps, both assistants offer web search, file and image uploads, voice conversation and picture creation. The details differ:

  • X integration. Grok can look at posts on X and is built into the X apps. If your questions are about what people on X are saying right now, Grok has an edge.
  • Breadth. ChatGPT has a long list of tools, connectors and custom assistants, and is supported by many third-party apps and workplaces.
  • Images and video. Grok's media tool is Grok Imagine, which also makes short videos with sound. ChatGPT has its own image creation.
  • Agents. Both push toward assistants that carry out longer tasks; xAI's version is Grok Bot on its paid plans.

None of those app features exist in our chat. Here you get the Grok models themselves with image input, but no web search, X search, voice or image generation.

Tone and style

Grok was designed from the start to be direct and a little irreverent, and it still tends to be blunter and more playful than ChatGPT's default voice. ChatGPT usually opens more neutrally and more cautiously. Both follow instructions about tone well, so if you want a formal report from Grok or a jokey caption from ChatGPT, just ask. Grok's looser style has also led to public controversies on X, which is worth keeping in mind for sensitive topics.

Price and free access

Both have free tiers with limits. xAI's free plan has no published message quota and keeps its newest models for subscribers; its paid X Subscription runs from $8 to $200 a month, with one weekly usage pool shared between Grok and the Cursor code editor (plan prices as of October 2026). ChatGPT has its own free and paid tiers with different models on each.

For developers, Grok 4.7 and GPT-6 Sol cost the same for input, but Grok 4.7 is cheaper for output. At the low end, GPT-6 Luna is much cheaper per token than Grok 4.20. On our site, Grok is free with 30 messages a day and no account.

Choose Grok if…

  • you want answers informed by X, or you already spend time on X;
  • you like a direct, informal voice by default;
  • you are a developer who wants strong coding models at a lower output price;
  • you want to try a top model without signing up anywhere: our chat offers Grok 4.7 for 10 messages a day.

Try Grok 4.7 in our chat or start with the fast Grok 4.20.

Choose ChatGPT if…

  • you want the widest choice of built-in tools, connectors and third-party integrations;
  • your school or company already uses ChatGPT and has policies around it;
  • you prefer a more neutral, cautious default tone;
  • you need a very cheap model for high volumes, where GPT-6 Luna's price is hard to beat.
