What the translator does

Paste text in any language, choose where it should go, and get a translation that reads as if someone had written it in that language to begin with. You do not need to say what the source language is; the model recognizes it. The list covers 60 target languages, from Albanian and Amharic to Urdu, Uzbek and Vietnamese, including both Simplified and Traditional Chinese and both Brazilian and European Portuguese.

Translations are produced by Grok 4.20, a large language model from xAI. Unlike older phrase-by-phrase engines, it looks at the whole passage, so it can carry tone and intent across, not just words. Its instructions also protect things that should never change: names, brands, numbers, code, links, Markdown formatting and line breaks.

How to use the translator

  1. Paste or type the text. A text message, a product page, a letter from a school abroad: anything that fits under the character counter.
  2. Pick the target language from the list of 60 target languages, sorted by English name.
  3. Choose a style. Natural is everyday native phrasing. Formal is courteous and fit for business or official use. Informal sounds like friends writing to each other. Close to the source keeps the original wording and sentence order as far as correct grammar allows, which helps when you study a text or need to show exactly what it said.
  4. Add notes if you want them. With "Add notes on tricky phrases", the translation is followed by up to three phrases that were hard to carry over, with the choice explained in the language of your source text.
  5. Generate, then copy the result, regenerate, or open it in the chat to ask questions about specific words.

Tips for better translations

  • Give context in the text when it matters. "Bank" can be a river bank or a building. A line such as "(context: a fishing trip)" before the text helps, and you can delete it from the result.
  • Choose formal or informal deliberately. Languages such as German, French, Japanese or Korean mark politeness in grammar, so the style setting changes more than tone.
  • Use notes for idioms and jokes. They show you where the translation had to depart from the literal meaning.
  • Round-trip important text. Translate the result back into your language in a second run and see whether the meaning held.

Example

We ran the first sample text into Japanese with the Natural style and notes switched on:

Sorry, I can't make it to dinner tonight. My train is stuck outside the city and nobody knows when it will move again. Let's pick another evening this week?

Grok 4.20 returned a relaxed, apologetic Japanese message rather than a stiff word-for-word version, then added three notes in English, explaining, for example, that it phrased "let's pick another evening" as a soft suggestion instead of a literal question because that sounds more natural in Japanese. That is the notes option doing its job: you see which choices were made and why.

Limits and honest advice

  • Not a certified translation. Official documents, contracts, immigration papers and medical instructions need a qualified human translator. Use this tool to understand them, not to submit them.
  • Quality varies by language. Results are usually strongest for widely used languages and can be less polished for languages with less training data. Ask a native speaker to check anything public.
  • Specialist vocabulary. Legal, medical and engineering terms may have fixed equivalents that a general model does not always pick. Check key terms against a glossary from your field.
  • Privacy. To translate it, your text passes through our server and OpenRouter on its way to xAI. Do not paste passport numbers, passwords or other sensitive data.

Translator FAQ

Is this translator free?

Yes, without an account. Each translation uses one of the 30 free messages you have per day on this site, shared with the chat and the other tools.

Can I translate between two languages that are not English?

Yes. Paste Polish text and choose Persian, or paste Indonesian and choose Korean; there is no need to go through English.

Why is my language missing from the list?

We listed languages where results are generally usable. For another language, ask in the chat with a prompt like translate into any language and explain idioms, and have a native speaker check the result.

Can it translate a photo of a sign or a menu?

Not on this page, which takes text only. In the chat you can attach the photo and ask Grok to read and translate it, since all three models there understand images.

What if the text is already in the target language?

You get it back with light corrections. For a proper proofread, use the Grammar Checker, and for rewording use the Paraphraser.
