Grok vs Gemini
Gemini is built into Google's services; Grok is tied to X and xAI's own apps. Here is how the two families compare in October 2026 and which fits which kind of work.

Where each assistant lives
The quickest way to understand Grok and Gemini is to look at where they sit. Gemini is Google's assistant and model family, built into Android, Gmail, Docs, Search and the rest of Google's products. Grok is made by xAI, now a SpaceX company that has gone by SpaceXAI and SpaceXSI, and it is woven into the social network X. So the choice often comes down to which world you spend your day in. Below we compare the current models, the official apps, developer prices and what you can try for free.
Grok.Online is an independent website that runs Grok models through an API provider. Gemini is not available in our chat.

The model families
Google splits Gemini into fast "Flash" models and larger "Pro" models. Its newest release is Gemini 3.8 Flash from September 2, 2026, which reads text, images, video, audio and documents in one model. Gemini 3.1 Pro, released as a preview in February 2026, is the larger reasoning model. xAI's line is simpler to describe: Grok 4.7 is the flagship, released September 21, 2026, with a new larger base model and stronger coding; Grok 4.3 is a cheaper reasoning model from April; Grok 4.20 is the quick one from March.
We do not repeat benchmark claims from either company. Both families are near the front of the field, and results swing by task. If you work a lot with video or audio, Gemini's wider input support is a clear practical difference; for text and images, the two are close enough that you should compare them on your own prompts.
Daily use: Google world vs X world
Gemini's biggest advantage is reach. If you use Gmail, Google Docs, Google Drive or an Android phone, Gemini is already there and can work with your mail, files and calendar once you allow it. It also uses Google Search to ground answers on current pages.
Grok's advantage is X. It can search posts on X, explain a trending topic or summarize a thread, and it sits right inside the X apps. On grok.com and in the Grok apps it also searches the web, accepts files, talks by voice and creates pictures and short videos through Grok Imagine.
If neither ecosystem matters to you, think about style. Grok tends to be more direct and informal; Gemini tends to be more measured. Both adapt when you tell them what you want.
Prices for developers
For API users the numbers are close but shaped differently. Gemini 3.8 Flash has a lower input price than any of our Grok models but a higher output price than Grok 4.7. Grok 4.3 and Grok 4.20 are the cheapest option here when answers are long, at $2.50 per million output tokens. Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview costs the same as Grok 4.7 for input and twice as much for output. If your app sends long documents and gets short answers, Gemini Flash may come out cheaper; if it writes long answers, Grok usually does.
Both APIs are available directly from their makers and through OpenRouter. Our Grok API guide has code samples for both routes on the Grok side.
Free access
Google offers Gemini for free with a Google account, with paid plans for more use and the larger models. xAI's free plan is limited and keeps the newest models for subscribers. On Grok.Online you can use Grok 4.20, Grok 4.3 Thinking and Grok 4.7 for free without an account, up to 30 messages a day, of which up to 10 can go to Grok 4.7. Your conversations stay in your browser.
Working with pictures
Both families can look at an image and talk about it: read a receipt, explain a chart, describe a screenshot or spot what is wrong in a photo of a broken part. In our chat you can attach a picture to any message for any of the three Grok models. Try it with something simple, such as a photo of a menu in another language and the question "What would you recommend for someone who doesn't eat meat?"
Making pictures is a different matter. Both official apps create images, Grok through xAI's Grok Imagine and Gemini through Google's own image models, but our chat does not generate images at all. If that is what you need, see our page on Grok Imagine.

- you need to send video, audio or long files straight to the model;
- your app sends large inputs and receives short outputs;
- you want answers grounded in Google Search inside the official app.
