Grok on the web: every way to use it online

You can talk to Grok in a browser in several places. This page walks through grok.com, Grok on X, the phone apps and our free site, and says plainly where each one is better.

The short answer

If you want Grok in a web browser, you have four realistic choices:

  • grok.com, xAI's own web app. The most complete version of Grok, with a limited free tier.
  • Grok on X, at x.com/i/grok or the Grok tab in X. Handy if you already live on X.
  • The official Grok apps for iPhone and Android. Not a browser, but the same account and features on your phone.
  • Grok.Online, this independent site. Real Grok models, free, no account, but a simpler feature set.

Each one is a fair choice for a different person. Below you will find how to start with each, what you get, what you give up, and a table to compare them. Everything here reflects what we could confirm in October 2026; xAI changes plans and limits often, so check the official pages before you pay for anything.

Option 1: grok.com, the official web app

Open grok.com in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari and you land on a single text box. You can type a question straight away. xAI's own consumer FAQ confirms that you can use Grok without logging in, with some trade-offs: chats you have while logged out are not kept for you after the session, and in most regions outside the EU and UK you cannot opt those chats out of model training.

To keep your history and unlock more, create an account. You can sign up with an e-mail address, Google or Apple, or log in with your X account. Once signed in, the same account works on grok.com, the phone apps and, if you link it, on X.

What you get on grok.com:

  • a mode picker, from fast replies to slower, more thorough ones;
  • web and X search with source links;
  • file and image uploads, Projects to group chats, and voice;
  • image and video generation in Grok Imagine on paid plans;
  • privacy settings, including an "Improve the model" switch under Settings, Data, and a Private Chat mode that is not used for training.

Free use is capped. xAI's pricing page lists the Free plan as "limited" without a fixed number, and the newest models and most media tools need a paid plan. Our page on using Grok for free covers the details.

Option 2: Grok on X

If you use X (the former Twitter), Grok is already there. On the website, open x.com/i/grok or click Grok in the left menu. In the X apps, it has its own tab. You can chat with it like any assistant, and you can also ask it about a specific post, for example to summarize a long thread or explain the context of a news story.

A few things to know. You need an X account, and your use of Grok there is governed by X's own terms and privacy settings, not by grok.com's. Training opt-out for Grok on X is set in X's privacy settings. Limits for free accounts are tighter than on paid plans, and paid X plans now come bundled with Grok in xAI's new X Subscription. Answers on X lean on what is happening on the platform, which is great for trending topics and less useful for quiet, private work like drafting a cover letter.

Option 3: the official Grok apps

xAI publishes Grok apps for iPhone, iPad and Android. They are not web pages, but people searching for "Grok online" often end up wanting them, because they are the most comfortable way to use Grok on a phone. The apps offer voice conversations, camera input and the same modes as grok.com, and they sync with your grok.com account. Download them only from the App Store or Google Play, and check that the publisher is xAI or SpaceXAI. Many look-alike apps use the Grok name without any link to xAI.

Option 4: Grok.Online, this site

Grok.Online is an independent website, not run by or affiliated with xAI, SpaceX or X. Our chat connects to real Grok models through a cloud API, so the answers come from the same model families xAI sells to developers. What makes it different:

  • No account at all. Open the page and type. Nothing to install.
  • Three models to choose from: Grok 4.20 for fast answers (the default), Grok 4.3 Thinking for problems that need reasoning, and Grok 4.7, the newest flagship, for up to 10 messages a day.
  • A clear daily allowance: 30 free messages per visitor per day, shared with our tool pages, reset every day.
  • Images in: attach a photo or screenshot and ask about it.
  • Private by design: your chat history stays in your browser. You can export it, import it on another device, or share a read-only link.
  • Extras: 16 ready-made assistants, a prompt library and 12 AI tools such as a summarizer and a translator.

And what it does not do, so there are no surprises: our chat has no web or X search, no voice mode and no image generation. It cannot read posts on X. It answers from what the model learned in training, so for today's news or prices, use grok.com or another source with search.

Which one should you use?

Use grok.com if you want the complete Grok: search, voice, Imagine and the agent features, and you are happy to sign in or pay for more use. It is the official product and the best choice for research on current events.

Use Grok on X if your questions are about posts, people and trends on X, or you simply want Grok one click away while you scroll.

Use the apps if you mostly use your phone or like talking rather than typing.

Use Grok.Online if you want to try Grok right now without creating an account, compare the fast, thinking and flagship models side by side, keep your history on your own device, or use ready-made tools for writing and study. It is also a good backup when you hit the free limit elsewhere.

Many people combine them: grok.com for searches, our site for quick drafts and study help without logging in.

Tips for Grok on the web

  • Bookmark the real address. Type grok.com yourself rather than clicking ads; there are many copycat sites with similar names.
  • Say what you need. "Explain this to a beginner in five bullet points" gets a better answer than a single keyword. Our guide on how to use Grok has more examples.
  • Pick the right mode or model. Fast answers for simple questions, thinking models for maths and multi-step logic.
  • Check facts. Grok can be wrong. Open the sources when search is on, and verify important details when it is not.
  • Mind what you paste. Leave out passwords, card numbers and confidential work documents.
