How to use Grok for free

Grok has a free tier, but it is limited and the newest features sit behind paid plans. Here is what you get without paying, on xAI's apps and on our site.

Yes, Grok is free, up to a point

You can use Grok without paying. xAI offers a free tier on grok.com, in its phone apps and inside X, and independent sites such as this one let you talk to Grok models at no cost too. What "free" means differs a lot between them, though. Some give you a handful of messages and then ask you to wait, some keep the newest model for subscribers, and none of them offer endless use. This page lays out the options as of October 2026 so you can pick the one that fits how often you need Grok.

What the official free plan includes

Since October 13, 2026, xAI (now branded SpaceXSI) sells Grok as part of a bundle called The X Subscription, which combines Grok, Grok Bot, the Cursor code editor and X Premium. Its lowest tier is Free, at no charge. xAI describes it as daily access to Grok with "limited" AI use, a starter allowance for Cursor's coding agents, and standard X features.

In practice, the free plan covers ordinary chat on grok.com, the apps and X, with some search. Things to keep in mind:

  • No published quota. xAI does not state a fixed number of free messages. When you run out, the app tells you to wait, and the allowance depends on demand and your account.
  • Not the newest model. Coverage of the launch notes that Premium or higher is required to access the latest Grok models.
  • Few media tools. Image and video generation in Grok Imagine is presented as a paid feature, and free access to it has been switched on and off several times.
  • Logged-out use is possible on grok.com, but those chats are not saved for you, and in many regions you cannot opt them out of training.

What the paid plans add

If the free tier is too tight, these are the individual plans listed on x.ai/pricing (plan prices as of October 2026, before tax):

PlanPer monthMain additions
Free$0Limited chat and agent use, standard X
Plus$8More usage for Grok Chat, Voice, Imagine and Build, API access, Cursor, X checkmark
Premium$30Four times the Plus usage, latest Grok models, Grok Bot, image and video creation
Super$100Fifteen times the Plus usage, priority access at busy times
Ultra$200Fifty times the Plus usage

Paid usage comes from one weekly pool shared across Grok and Cursor. Older plans such as SuperGrok and X Premium keep working for people who already have them; switching is optional. Prices change, so confirm on xAI's site before you subscribe.

Free Grok on Grok.Online

Our site is an independent project, not run by xAI, and it takes a different approach to free access. You get real Grok models through a cloud API with a clear, fixed allowance:

  • 30 messages a day per visitor, shared between the chat and our AI tools, reset daily.
  • Grok 4.7 included: up to 10 of those 30 messages can go to Grok 4.7, xAI's newest flagship from September 2026.
  • Two other models with no separate cap: Grok 4.20, the fast default, and Grok 4.3 Thinking for reasoning.
  • No account, no card, no app. It works in any modern browser on a computer or phone.
  • Image questions: attach a photo or screenshot to a message.

The site is paid for by ads placed around the page content; answers themselves never contain ads. The trade-off is features: our chat leaves out searching the web and X, talking by voice and making pictures, and it cannot read posts on X. For those, the official grok.com is the place to go. What you do get is the same model family, a predictable number of messages every day, and history that stays on your own device instead of in an online account.

Other ways to get Grok at no cost

  • Grok inside other tools. Grok models appear in products built on xAI's API. Cursor, for example, offers Grok models on its plans, and xAI's free tier includes a small coding allowance there.
  • Open weights. Grok-1 and Grok 2.5 can be downloaded for free from xAI's Hugging Face page. They are old models, though, and running them needs serious hardware: the Grok 2 model card calls for eight GPUs with more than 40 GB of memory each.
  • The API is not free. Developers pay per token through the xAI API or OpenRouter. It is cheap for small experiments; see our Grok API guide for prices.

Making a free allowance last

Whichever free option you use, a few habits stretch it further:

  • Put everything in one message. Give the context, the task and the format you want at once, instead of sending three short follow-ups.
  • Use the right model. On our site, save Grok 4.7 for hard tasks and let Grok 4.20 handle quick questions.
  • Use a tool page for routine jobs. Our summarizer, paraphraser and translator are set up for one-shot results.
  • Start a new chat for a new topic, so the model is not distracted by an old conversation.
  • Reuse good prompts from our prompt library rather than experimenting from scratch.

FAQ

Is Grok completely free?

There is a free tier, but it is limited. xAI's free plan has no published message count, and the newest models and media tools are on paid plans.

Do I need an X account to use Grok for free?

No. grok.com accepts e-mail, Google or Apple sign-in and allows some use without logging in. Our site needs no account of any kind.

Can I use Grok 4.7 for free?

On Grok.Online, yes: up to 10 messages a day within the 30-message allowance. On xAI's own plans, the latest models are tied to the paid tiers.

Why does Grok.Online have a daily limit?

Every answer costs us money at the model provider. A fixed daily allowance, paid for by ads, keeps the site free for everyone.
