Grok models
What each Grok model does best, which three you can use in our chat, and where the rest of the Grok family fits.

Grok is a family of AI models built by xAI, the company Elon Musk started in 2023, which became part of SpaceX in February 2026 and now goes by the name SpaceXSI. The family has grown quickly, from the first Grok in November 2023 to several new releases in 2026 alone. This section explains the models you can use in our chat, the ones you can only use elsewhere, and how they relate to each other.
In our chat
- Grok 4.20 is our default. In our chat it answers straight away, without a visible thinking phase, which makes it the quickest choice for everyday questions and writing.
- Grok 4.3 is a reasoning model. We run it with a short thinking step, so it pauses for a moment and then gives a more carefully worked answer.
- Grok 4.7 arrived in September 2026 and is xAI's current flagship. It is the most capable of the three and is limited to 10 messages a day on our site.
All three read images as well as text. In our chat they have no internet access, so they answer from what they learned in training.

Several other Grok models exist but are not available in our chat: Grok 4.5 and Grok 4.6, which came between 4.3 and 4.7; Grok 4.20 Multi-Agent, built for research tasks with several agents; Grok Build, a model made for coding agents; and Grok Imagine, xAI's model for images and video. Older models such as Grok-1, Grok-2, Grok 3 and Grok 4 are covered in our Grok history.
