Paraphrasing Tool
Paste a passage, pick a style and get it back in fresh wording with the same facts. Ask for three versions when you want to compare options.
What the paraphraser does
Sometimes the content of a sentence is right and the wording is not. It sounds stiff, it repeats a phrase from the paragraph before, or it is too dense for the person who has to read it. The paraphraser keeps what your text says and changes how it says it: the same facts, names and figures in new sentences.
The tool runs on Grok 4.20, which replies almost instantly. Its instructions forbid adding ideas or dropping important points, and they ask for real restructuring rather than swapping a word for a synonym here and there. Technical terms, product names and direct quotations are left alone, because changing them would change the meaning.
How to use it
- Paste your text. One sentence or several paragraphs both work. Paragraph breaks and bullet lists survive the rewrite.
- Choose a style. Fluent keeps the length and smooths the wording. Plain and simple uses everyday words for younger readers or language learners. Formal suits official letters and reports. Friendly loosens things up. Concise trims padding down to about two thirds of the length. Academic adds precise vocabulary and careful hedging. Vivid gives the prose livelier verbs and images.
- Decide on versions. One version is quickest; three numbered versions let you compare different directions side by side.
- Generate with the button or Ctrl+Enter, then copy the result, regenerate, or carry it into the chat with Continue in chat.
Getting a better rewrite
- Work in chunks. A paragraph or two at a time gives you more control than a whole chapter, and it is easier to compare with the original.
- Match the style to the reader. A notice for tenants wants Plain and simple; a grant application wants Formal or Academic.
- Use three versions for headlines and openings. Short, important lines benefit most from seeing alternatives.
- Compare before you keep. Read the original and the rewrite together and confirm that no number, date or name has shifted.
- Need a fix rather than a rewrite? If the problem is mistakes, not wording, the Grammar Checker changes far less of your text.
Example
Original, from the sample text under the box:
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the community garden meeting scheduled for Thursday has been moved to next Monday at the same time and place.
| Style | Rewrite |
|---|---|
| Plain and simple | Something came up, so the garden meeting is not on Thursday any more. It is now next Monday, same time, same place. |
| Formal | Owing to circumstances beyond our control, Thursday's community garden meeting will instead take place next Monday, at the usual time and venue. |
| Concise | The community garden meeting moves from Thursday to next Monday, same time and place. |
All three keep the two facts that matter: the new day and the unchanged time and place.
Honest use and limits
- Paraphrasing is not citing. If the ideas come from someone else, they still need a reference, however different the wording looks. Many schools and universities treat reworded but uncredited text as plagiarism.
- Check rules before using it for coursework. Some teachers allow AI rewording, others do not. When in doubt, ask.
- Meaning can drift. Rarely, a rewrite softens a claim or makes a cautious statement sound certain. Contracts, medical notes and legal text deserve a line-by-line comparison, or better, a human editor.
- Private text stays your call. To produce the rewrite, your text travels from our server through our AI gateway and OpenRouter to xAI. We do not store message text, but removing personal data first is still a good habit.
Paraphraser FAQ
Is the paraphrasing tool free?
Yes, with no account. Every Generate counts as one of the 30 free messages you get each day across the chat and all tools.
Which languages can I paraphrase?
Paste the text in any language Grok knows well, such as German, Turkish, Japanese or Portuguese, and the rewrite stays in that language. The instructions in the background are in English, but the tool is told to answer in the language of your text.
Will the rewrite pass an AI detector?
We make no promises about detectors, and neither should anyone else; they are unreliable in both directions. The better goal is text you have read, edited and can stand behind.
Can it make my text longer?
Not on purpose; the paraphraser keeps roughly the same content. To expand a passage with new points, use the AI Writer or ask in the chat.
Can I ask for a specific reading level?
Plain and simple aims at a teenager or language learner. For something more exact, open the chat with a ready prompt: rewrite for a 12-year-old. Our guide to AI writing tips has more ideas.
