Assistants

An assistant is a saved role for Grok, such as tutor, editor or interviewer. Start one with a click or write your own.

Every time you start a chat, you could explain to Grok who it should be: "act as a strict proofreader, keep my style, list your changes". An assistant saves you from repeating that. It is a stored set of instructions that gives Grok a role and a way of working for the whole conversation. Pick one, and the chat opens with that role already in place.

The built-in assistants

Sixteen assistants come ready to use. They cover drafting and proofreading, translation, coding, tutoring, emails, summaries, brainstorming, cooking, trip planning, careers, marketing, explaining contracts and official letters, everyday wellness, language practice and mock job interviews. Each card below says what the assistant does and suggests a few first questions. Press Start chat to open the chat with that assistant switched on, and return to plain Grok whenever you like.

An assistant changes how Grok behaves, not which model answers. All of them work with Grok 4.20, Grok 4.3 and Grok 4.7, and you can still change the model in the menu. Some assistants set clear limits on purpose: the wellness assistant gives general information rather than medical advice, and the contract explainer helps you understand documents but is no substitute for a lawyer.

Make your own

In the chat, open Assistants and choose New assistant. Give it a name and a one-line description, then write its instructions: what role it plays, what it should do, which tone to use and what to ask when information is missing. You can add a few starter questions too. Custom assistants are saved in your browser along with your chats and are included when you export.

Be specific. "Be helpful" changes almost nothing, while "check my English emails, fix mistakes, explain each fix in one short line and keep my tone" gives Grok something to work with. For more ideas, read Grok prompts that work or browse the prompt library.
