This page collects the questions visitors send us most often about Grok.Online: how the free chat behaves, which Grok models you are talking to, what happens to your history, how the tools and assistants fit in, and how the site pays for itself. Missing something? Ask us through the contact form and we may add it here.

Using the chat

Do I need to create an account?

No. There is nothing to register and nothing to log into. Open the chat, type and press Enter. The flip side of having no account is that your chats are tied to the browser you use: they are saved there, not on our server, and they will not appear on your other devices unless you move them yourself with export and import.

How many free messages do I get?

Every visitor can send up to 30 messages a day. The chat and the tool pages draw from the same allowance, so one tool run counts as one message. The number left is shown in the chat and the counter resets daily. We cap usage because every answer costs us money at the model provider, and a fair daily share keeps the site free for everyone and makes automated abuse less attractive.

Why is Grok 4.7 limited to 10 messages a day?

Grok 4.7 is the most capable model in our chat and also the most expensive one for us to run. You can use it for up to 10 of your 30 daily messages. When those 10 are used, the chat tells you and moves the conversation to Grok 4.20, so you can keep going without starting over. Grok 4.7 is available again the next day.

Which devices and browsers are supported?

Any up-to-date browser on Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, macOS, Linux or a Chromebook should work. You do not need to install anything. On a phone, the chat list slides away behind a menu button so the conversation can use the whole screen. Very old browsers may struggle with saving history or attaching pictures; updating the browser usually fixes that.

Why did an answer stop halfway or forget the beginning of our chat?

Each answer has a maximum length. If one ends abruptly, write "continue" and Grok will pick up where it stopped. In very long conversations, the oldest messages are left out of what is sent to the model so the request stays a manageable size, which means Grok may lose track of early details. Starting a new chat with a short recap of what matters usually works better than one endless thread.

The Grok models

Which models can I chat with?

Three Grok models made by xAI: Grok 4.20, the default, which answers right away; Grok 4.3 Thinking, which works through the problem briefly before it replies; and Grok 4.7, released in September 2026 and the newest and strongest of the three. Switch in the model menu at the top of the chat at any time. Every reply shows the name of the model behind it.

Which model should I pick?

Start with Grok 4.20 for everyday questions, writing and quick explanations. Choose Grok 4.3 when a task benefits from careful step-by-step thinking, such as a logic puzzle, a tricky calculation or a plan with many conditions; expect a few seconds of "Thinking…" before the text appears. Save Grok 4.7 for the hardest jobs, like a complex piece of code or a long document you want analysed thoroughly. Our comparison of Grok 4.20 and Grok 4.3 goes into more detail.

Are these really Grok models, or something else with the same name?

They are the real models. Our server forwards your message through our AI gateway to OpenRouter, a service that gives developers access to many AI models, and OpenRouter passes it to xAI, which runs Grok. We do not host, train or modify the models. What we add is the website around them: the chat interface, saved history, assistants, tools and translations. The models themselves are the same ones developers reach through the official Grok API.

Who makes Grok, and what is SpaceXAI?

Grok is developed by xAI, the AI company Elon Musk founded in 2023. In February 2026 xAI became a subsidiary of SpaceX. It was renamed SpaceXAI in July 2026 and has used the name SpaceXSI since October 2026, which is why some services now list Grok under those names. Grok.Online is not part of any of these companies. Read What is Grok? and our Grok history for the full story.

Can Grok search the internet or read posts on X?

Not in our chat. Grok on grok.com and inside X can use search tools, but on Grok.Online the models answer only from what they learned in training, and that knowledge stops at a cut-off date. For Grok 4.7, xAI gives May 2026 as the cut-off. For news, prices, schedules and anything else that changes, check a current source. Our guide on checking AI answers shows quick ways to do that.

Can Grok see images or create them?

It can see them. All three models accept pictures: add one image per message, such as a photo, a screenshot, a chart or a page of notes, and ask what you want to know. You can attach up to 10 images a day. Creating pictures is a different matter: xAI has a separate model for that, Grok Imagine, and it is not part of our chat.

History, sharing and privacy

Where are my conversations saved?

In your browser's own storage on the device you are using. We keep no copy of your chats on our server. That keeps things private, but it also means that clearing your browser data, using a private window or switching browsers can make them disappear. Use Export in the chat menu to save a copy as Markdown, plain text or JSON.

How do I move my chats to another device?

Open the chat menu, choose Export all chats and save the JSON file. On the other device, open Grok.Online, choose Import chats and select that file. Your own assistants travel in the same file. Keep the file somewhere safe, because it is a plain copy of your conversations.

How do share links work?

Press Share in a conversation and create a link of the form grok.online/s/ followed by a short code. Anyone who opens it sees a read-only copy of the chat as it was at that moment. Later messages are not added, and attached images are left out. Shared pages carry a noindex tag, so search engines should not list them, but anyone you give the link to can pass it on.

Can a shared conversation be removed?

Yes. Send us the link through the contact form and ask for removal. You can also use the Report button on a shared page if you see something that breaks the rules or concerns you personally. Deleting the chat in your own browser does not delete the shared copy, so do send the request.

Do you read or keep what I type?

We do not store the text of your messages or of Grok's replies. To produce an answer, the message has to travel from your browser through our server and our gateway to the model provider, and our gateway records only technical details such as the model, the size of the request, the time and a hashed IP address. The Privacy Policy describes each step. Even so, avoid pasting passwords, ID numbers or other information you would not want to leave your device.

Tools, assistants and prompts

What are the AI tools?

They are twelve single-purpose pages, including a summarizer, paraphraser, translator, grammar checker, email writer and math solver. Each one has a small form: you paste your text, set a few options and press Generate, and Grok 4.20 writes the result with instructions prepared for that task. You can copy the output or press Continue in chat to refine it in a conversation. See them all on the tools page.

What is an assistant?

An assistant is a set of saved instructions that gives Grok a role for the whole conversation, for example a patient tutor, a proofreader or a mock interviewer. Sixteen come built in, and you can write your own in the chat under Assistants. Your custom assistants are stored in your browser with your chats. Browse the assistants page to see what each one does.

Where can I find good prompts?

The prompt library groups ready-made prompts by task: writing, study, coding, business, marketing, careers, creative work and everyday life. Replace the parts in square brackets with your own details and open the prompt in the chat with one click. If you want to write better prompts yourself, start with our guide to Grok prompts that work.

Costs, ads and the people behind the site

Why is it free, and will it stay free?

Ads pay for it. They appear in marked spaces around the content, never inside Grok's answers. That income covers the cost of the model requests, and the daily allowance keeps those costs predictable. There is no paid plan, no trial that turns into a subscription and no payment details to enter.

Is Grok.Online connected to xAI, SpaceX or X?

No. We are an independent team that runs this website. xAI does not run, sponsor or endorse it, and we do not speak for xAI. The official Grok service is available at grok.com, in xAI's own mobile apps and inside X. Our guide to Grok on the web explains the differences and the free options on each.

Do you have a mobile app?

Grok.Online works in your phone's browser, so no app is needed for it. Separately, our team publishes a free AI chat app for iPhone and Android called AI Chat — Smart AI Assistant, which you may see in the banners on this site. It is our own product, not something made or approved by xAI.

How can I report a problem or suggest something?

Use the contact form. Describe what happened, which page or model you were using and, if possible, attach a screenshot. Add your e-mail address if you want an answer. The form is also the right place for copyright notices and requests to remove shared conversations. Our Terms of Use explain the rules for using the site.
